UNLV Medicine Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic provides comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with a wide range of complex maternal and fetal issues. We offer a full spectrum of prenatal diagnoses and care for mothers and babies from conception to birth. 

As a UNLV academic medical clinic, we are dedicated to excellence in teaching and are responsible for educating MD residents in the diagnosis and treatment of complications during pregnancy.

Megumi Akiyama, MD
Maternal Fetal Medicine

Dr. Megumi Akiyama, an assistant professor in the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, completed a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at the University of Hawaii. 

A former staff perinatologist at Desert Perinatal Associates, Dr. Akiyama did her ob-gyn residency training at the University of Nevada, Reno. There, she won the Phillip H. Goodman Resident Competition in Critical Appraisal.

Samet Albayrak, MD
Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB-GYN)

Dr. Samet Albayrak, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the UNLV School of Medicine, has a particular interest in high-risk obstetric pregnancies, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, including robotic surgery. 

A native of Turkey, he earned his medical degree from the University of Istanbul and completed his residency training at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents.

Dr. James M. Alexander, MD is a professor and chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology. A 1991 graduate of the University of Texas at Houston, he went on to complete his residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern. After his fellowship, he stayed on as faculty at UTSW where he served in many leadership positions including chief of the obstetrics service.

Abbey E. Burger, DO

Dr. Burger earned her medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. She has been practicing in Obstetrics & Gynecology since completing her residency in 2016. She graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. Dr. Burger was the recipient of the 2019 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists National Faculty Award.

Bradley Burger, DO

Dr. Bradley Burger, who completed  his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Minnesota, is an assistant professor with the UNLV School of Medicine. 

An honors graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Burger has practiced as a general Ob/Gyn in both Nevada and Montana for 10 years. 

Dr. Burger, whose research has been published in the peer-reviewed Seminars in Oncology Journal, received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with honors and distinction from Penn State University.

Christina Clignett, APRN is originally from Los Angeles, California. She went to Glendale Community College where she studied nursing and then went to Harbor UCLA Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program. She earned her Bachelor and Master degree from University of Phoenix. She earned her Doctorate in Nursing Practice degree from Touro University in Henderson, Nevada. Christina has a particular interest in the care of adolescents and young women. She believes in health education, disease prevention and health promotion.

Dr. Jyoti Desai, an assistant professor in the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, participates with Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada and is also an active member of the UNLV School of Medicine’s admissions process. 

Dr. Desai enjoys fostering strong relationships with her patients and practicing evidence-based medicine in her clinic as well as in the hospital setting.

Sabrina Eisinga APRN

Sabrina Eisinga was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. She attended Arizona State University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Spanish. Later, she attended Nevada State College where she obtained her Nursing degree. She earned her master’s degree in Nursing with a specific concentration of Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In her free time, she enjoys, traveling, playing tennis, going to the gym, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Michael Gardner, UNLV School of Medicine Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs and UNLV Medicine President/CEO, is responsible for the management of clinical activities for more than 151 faculty physicians, 310 residents and 26 fellows throughout 17 clinics.  A native of El Paso, Texas, Dr. Gardner made Las Vegas his home in November 2017.

Gynecology, Robotic Gynecology Surgery

Dr. Nadia Gomez, an associate professor of gynecology and director of the minimally invasive gynecology surgery division at the UNLV School of Medicine, became in 2015 the first female physician to perform robotic benign gynecological surgery at University Medical Center, where she is currently the vice chair of the robotics committee.

Glendell de Guzman, MD

Dr. de Guzman is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and practices general obstetrics and gynecology. His main interests include general obstetrics, family planning, contraception counseling, STD screening and treatment, and gynecological surgical procedures.

Dr. de Guzman worked at the Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and its affiliated Harvard University hospitals for the last 3 years prior to joining the UNLV faculty.

Dr. Marsha Matsunaga-Kirgan, a professor and acting vice chair of the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has had her research published in publications that include the British Journal of Pharmacology and Journal of Investigative Medicine. 

In 2013 she won the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award. 

She is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine.

She is in the process of finishing her PhD in public health at Walden University. Kike has a particular interest in the care of adolescents and young women. Doctor John Phelps is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He completed his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He also completed a second fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.

Dr. Lawrence Shaw, an assistant professor in the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, is graduate of the University of California Irvine School of Medicine. 

Dr. Shaw,  who also holds a Master of Science degree in engineering from the University of Southern California, completed a residency at Southern Illinois University. 

His published research, “ Congenital Epulis: Three Dimensional Ultrasonographic Findings and Clinical Implications,” appeared in the Journal of Ultrasound Medicine.

Joseph Shea, MD

Dr. Joseph Shea, M.D. specializes in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine.

He most recently completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology through the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Medicine where he also obtained advanced Family Medicine Obstetrics fellowship training.

His prior residency training in Family Medicine was completed through the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Robert H. Wang completed his medical school education at the University of Alabama in Birmingham after he finished his graduate school education at the University of New Mexico with a PhD degree in immunology. 

He then received his OB/GYN residency training at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock.  After his training, Dr. Wang engaged in his solo practice in Houston for several years before he relocated to Las Vegas.

Dr. Ryan A K Young, an assistant professor in the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, graduated from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. 

He completed his OB/GYN residency at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Upon completion of his residency training, he joined the School’s Faculty and is now currently an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Medicine.

It is lunchtime — she eats in her office because of a busy schedule — and the director of the minimally invasive gynecology surgery division at the UNLV School of Medicine says she sometimes accompanied her parents to see patients.
